After more than 36 years of impactful leadership, Bill McKoskey officially retires as CEO of Horwitz, marking the end of an era for the New Hope-based design-build mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) specialty contractor. McKoskey’s career has been defined by his strategic leadership, profound dedication to clients and staff, and numerous contributions that have helped shape Horwitz’s position as a top-tier mechanical contractor in the Twin Cities.
McKoskey joined Horwitz in 1988, fresh out of the University of Minnesota with a mechanical engineering degree. Reflecting on his early days at the company, he recalls, “It was a fluke of good fortune that I landed at Horwitz. What began as a supporting role quickly turned into a challenging and fulfilling career where I was given room to grow.” In this all-encompassing role, McKoskey’s adaptability enabled him to steadily advance within the firm—from project manager to partner by 1991, and ultimately to President in 2003. During his time as CEO, he focused on building a talented and motivated team while fostering a collaborative, driven workplace culture.
Known for his ability to drive innovation and operational excellence, McKoskey oversaw a range of high-profile projects, from medical facilities to complex industrial facilities. Yet, as he reflects on his career, McKoskey humbly refrains from listing accomplishments, instead noting, “The success of Horwitz lies in the hard work and talent of our team. I’m proud of the relationships we’ve built and the projects across the Twin Cities that stand as testament to those partnerships.”
While McKoskey’s departure will undoubtedly be felt, the firm looks forward to a strong future under a tenured leadership team, including new CEO Matt Dekkers, who McKoskey personally brought into Horwitz. “Matt has brought a people-first leadership approach that aligns with the values Horwitz has been built upon,” McKoskey said. “He’ll continue to carry our vision forward with enthusiasm and determination to keep Horwitz moving ahead in a rapidly changing industry.”
Under McKoskey’s leadership, Horwitz expanded its service offerings to include comprehensive mechanical, electrical, and plumbing solutions, positioning the company as a key partner in many significant projects. With eight firm partners and Svoboda Capital Partners as a strategic equity partner, Horwitz is set to continue the legacy of innovation, service, and client-focused excellence that McKoskey helped establish.
As for what’s next, McKoskey’s retirement will offer him time to travel, including an African safari, and pursue personal interests like learning to play the piano. “I’ll miss the grind, the hustle, and the thrill of competition. But I leave knowing that Horwitz is in good hands, and that’s what matters most.”
Horwitz would like to extend gratitude to Bill McKoskey for his dedication and leadership, and to clients and partners whose trust has fueled its success. With his retirement, Horwitz embraces an exciting new chapter, grounded in the legacy and vision that McKoskey leaves behind.
